The life beyond the holiday

A lovely place to visit. But would you want to live there in November?

The sea, the light, the long lunches. Of course they matter. So do the supermarket, the winter, the cost of an ordinary month and the people you can call when something goes wrong. A place has to work when the holiday ends.

The course helps you put those realities alongside the things that drew you there. Examine what daily life might require, where your expectations need checking and which compromises you are prepared to make.

Keep the excitement. Give it something solid to stand on.

What changes

Less going round in circles. More knowing what comes next.

Bring your ideas, doubts and research into one structured decision.

  • Clarify what you expect a move to change, so you can examine those expectations before committing.
  • Identify the everyday needs that should guide your choice of destination.
  • Put practical questions, costs and uncertainties alongside the appeal of a place.
  • Compare options against your priorities and see which compromises you can live with.
  • Build a written decision and a manageable next step, whether you move, prepare for later or stay.
The course

Four weeks to work through the decision.

Follow the suggested weekly rhythm or take longer where you need it. Each stage combines reading, reflection and practical work, building a part of your relocation decision.

Week one

Understand what is driving the move.

Examine what you want to leave, what you hope to find and what could follow you wherever you go. Give your plans a clearer starting point.

Relocation Motive Audit

Week two

Picture life beyond arrival.

Consider the routines, costs, support and adjustments that could shape your first year. Identify what needs researching before you commit.

First Year Reality Map

Week three

Choose your compromises.

Compare what each option gives you and what it asks of you. Establish which trade-offs are acceptable and which would make a place wrong for you.

Trade-Off Ledger

Week four

Decide what happens next.

Bring your findings together, record the questions that remain and choose your next step. Create a written decision you can return to as plans develop.

Relocation Decision Dossier

Your priorities come with you

Somewhere beautiful. Somewhere that works for you.

A slower pace can feel wonderful until you need something done quickly. A lively city can offer everything you want and more noise than you can bear. Every place comes with conditions, and the ones you welcome will be personal.

You may have a destination in mind, a shortlist that keeps changing or simply the feeling that it is time for something different. The course helps you establish what matters before the details take over.

Previous experience abroad helps, too. But a different stage of life brings different needs, and what worked ten years ago may deserve another look.

From Maggie

There is no such thing as a total reset.

There is only re-entry, under different conditions.

After more than 27 years of living abroad, I know how much a move can open up. I also know that the practical details and the life you actually want have to be considered together.

I created Architecture of Relocation to give that thinking some structure. The adult alternative to the fantasy is specificity: what matters to you, what a place can offer, what it will ask of you and what you are willing to choose.

Before you begin

A few practical questions.

Do I need to have chosen a country?

No. Use the course to examine an existing plan or establish the priorities you will use to compare destinations. An undecided starting point is perfectly workable.

Is this a video course?

This is a self-paced PDF course. You work through the book, weekly guides and fillable workbooks, building your own written decision as you go.

Do I have to finish in four weeks?

Four weeks is the suggested rhythm. Take the time you need for the research, conversations and decisions that arise along the way.

Can I type my answers into the workbooks?

Yes. Download the PDFs and open them in Adobe Acrobat Reader to complete the fillable fields and save your working copies.

What if I decide to stay?

Staying can be a considered outcome, just as moving or preparing for later can. The purpose is to reach a decision that makes sense for your circumstances and understand what led you there.

What does Private Advisory add?

Two private 60-minute consultations with Maggie, a review of your decision dossier and a personalised written action plan. You have dedicated time to discuss your situation and the questions that need closer attention.

Can we speak before I purchase?

Yes, and I recommend it if you would like to talk through your plans first. The free 20-minute introductory call is a chance to meet, ask questions and explore where the course or personal support could help.
